Description

WEYMOUTH SY6878NW BARRACK ROAD 873-1/24/14 (North side) Nos.1-8 (Consecutive) Coastguard Cottages, with boundary wall and piers GV II Coastguard cottages, now terrace of 8 houses. c1880. Flemish bond brickwork, stone dressings, slate roof. A long row of dwellings, entered from a terrace on the N side, away from the street, and facing the Harbour. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; Barrack Road front is in 9x2+1 windows, all small 12-pane sashes in flush stone dressings with alternating jambs and stone sills. The gables have raised coped verges set to bold modelled stone and brick kneelers, and there are 5 brick ridge stacks with brick cappings. The right-hand gable end has 2 windows and a plank door with a 3-pane transom light. The N side is similarly detailed, with 8 original doors under 3-pane transom lights, on 2 stone steps, and each with a cast-iron foot-scraper and flanked by small single lights. The cast-iron ogee gutters have down-pipes with an Admiralty anchor cast on. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: to Barrack Road is a full-width low brick wall to stone coping at approx 0.65m; at either end are pairs of square stone gate-piers with low pyramidal cappings. The wall continues to the right to link with the boundary to Nothe House (qv). Included as an unusually complete row of purpose-built housing of this type.
