Formerly Red Barracks, now block of 4 apartments. Early C19. Flemish bond brickwork, rendering, slate roof. A simple 2-storey, 9-window range, with 12-pane sashes to good brick voussoirs and stone sills. The central bay has a broad recessed blind arch containing a C20 door with transom light, on 2 steps. The left end is linked by a single-storey porch to Nos 54-59 (qv), and the right end, which is rendered, has a 12-pane sash at each level. The back, in brickwork, is in 4:1:4 bays, with 2-light casements with transom to brick segmental heads, rendered jambs, and stone sills. The centre bay has a small 2-light casement. At the ground floor the first 5 bays have smaller 2-light casements, with new brick infil above. The low-pitched hipped roof is set to a 2-course brick eaves band. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: Red Barracks formed part of a chain of one-troop cavalry stations along the south coast, planned by the Barrack Master, General Col DeLancey. Part of an externally complete group.
