II
Breakwater enclosing Portland Harbour. c1870. Large blocks of Portland stone. In 2 sections, each 1.3km long and separated by North Ship Channel. The first section is attached to the mainland at its W end, The inner section has a central roadway supported by broad embankments of piled stone blocks. The outer section is of similar construction, in a straight run, with a small light at the outer end, adjoining E Ship Channel. These breakwaters complete the enclosure of the harbour in conjunction with the main Portland Breakwater attached to the Island (see Portland list). An integral part of the defensive perimeter around the naval base of Portland and identical in form to the breakwaters listed in Portland CP.
