SY67SE THE GROVE, Grove 969-1/1/154 (South side) No.102 Governor's House with front boundary wall
GV II
Detached house, formerly Governor's House to the prison. c 1850. Rubble or squared rubble, slate roof. A broad-frontage house direct to the pavement, originally a compact square block, with prominent central bay on garden front, later extended each end on N side. Two storeys and basement, 2:3:1-windowed. To the left are 2 blanked window bays, then three 12-paned sashes above 2 sashes, one of these with brick jambs. The first-floor windows in this middle section are raised in part-dormers above eaves level, with hipped roofs and corbelled dressed stone surrounds. To the right, in a gabled section, a 12-pane sash in dressed stone raised surround with capping and with bracketted cill, above a 12-pane sash. Off-centre, left, a C20 door with small transom light in pilaster surround with moulded cornice. A plain mid string continues round the whole building. Lofty central ridge stack and smaller stack to right ridge, both with thin moulded capping and blocking course. Right return is rendered, with single and paired sashes at first floor, and a sash plus door under glazed lean-to porch at ground floor level. There is to the right a length of boundary wall to the street containing plank door in brick jambs. The S, or garden front has central 3-window section with hipped canted full-height bay, and 12-pane sashes at each level, those to first floor with part-dormers and dressings as on the N side; at ground floor 2 replaced with french doors. A flat-roofed 2-storey unit added, left. Two further lofty stacks. To the right, set back, is the wing extending the street front; a steel escape stair has been added. This is an important part of the group of prison buildings, with a visually significant position at the junction between Grove Road and The Grove.
