Description
PORTLAND
SY6873 CHISWELL, Chesil 969-1/3/18 (South side) 23/07/75 No.139 139 with boundary wall
II
Detached house. Early to mid-C18 but much modified. Rendered and scribed, small area of exposed large Portland stone block to ground floor left, asbestos cement slate roof, some stone slate. A free-standing property facing north along Chiswell. Two storeys. Central 3-storey 'tower' porch to coped gable has plain sashes over C20 door with very narrow transon light. To right are paired 4-pane sashes at ground and first floors, each with central rendered flush mullion. To left of porch similar paired sashes at first floor, above a blocked former shop-front - here some of the structural stonework exposed. Stone gable stacks with cappings, left gable with raised verge. Gable to road has attic light, and blocked door to right; at the back, which has some stone slating, a plain sash centrally at ground and first floors. Interior said to be completely altered, but this still offers externally evidence of its early provenance, and holds a key position visually at the south end of Chiswell.
