Listed Building: HM YOUNG OFFENDER INSTITUTION, E HALL (382038)

PORTLAND SY67SE THE GROVE, Grove 969-1/1/147 (North side) HM Young Offender Institution, E Hall GV II Prison cell block with attached punishment block.Probably 1848. Coursed and squared dressed Portland block, slate roof. The cell block, to the north adjacent to the N boundary wall (qv) is linked by a one-storey parapetted entrance lobby and link to a modified flat-roofed Education building to the S, behind which is a small rectangular punishment block, all grouped round a small internal exercise yard. E front has 2 large and 2 smaller segmental-headed iron-barred lights in flush surrounds and bold cills, with to right plank doors in square opening down steps; a further entry, left, to Education building. E Hall is plain coped-gable 2-storey 11-bay building, with large arched lights to each gable, and very small segmental-headed barred lights to heavy cills, but blank central bay over recessed paired doors to each flank. Punishment block has plain outer walls, entry on N side, roof concealed by parapet. Education block appears to have been modified with C20 flat concrete roof, but retains very small segmental-headed windows in 2 floors. Interior of E Hall, the cell block, with original structure and fittings, includes gallery on cast-iron brackets, cell doors, rod roof trusses, small top lights, but principal lighting to central space from large gable windows; punishment block interior with top lights also largely unaltered. The Education building not seen internally. From the detail it would seem likely that this is part of the 1848 prison scheme. Listing NGR: SY7005372453
