Description
WEYMOUTH
SY6685 CHURCH STREET, Upwey 873-1/5/548 (West side) 14/06/73 Outbuilding to west of The School (Formerly Listed as: CHURCH STREET, Upwey (West side) School Outbuilding to west in yard)
GV II
Outbuilding, possibly former workshop. Mid to late C19. Rubble, corrugated-iron roof. A lofty, plain gable-ended building, on the N side set against the rising ground level. The gable towards the School (qv) has 2 plank doors set flush, to segmental heads; in the gable above are 3 vertical slits, and below these an opening has been formed, and a large galvanised water tank set projecting from the wall. The return front has a central plank door flanked by 2-light casements, to wood lintels and that to the right with a drip-mould ; the jambs and lintels have slight stopped chamfers, commonly encountered in the local buildings. The outer gable has a wide 5-light casement to segmental head, beneath 3 vertical slits. INTERIOR: not accessible. The purpose of this building is not clear; the suggestion of dovecote is not easy to sustain; the gable slits seem more likely to be provided for ventilation purposes.
