SY6780SE DORCHESTER ROAD 873-1/15/73 (East side) 14/06/74 Nos.34 AND 36 Helmsley (No.36)
GV II
Semi-detached houses. c1830-1840 (RCHME), modified early C20. Rendered, hipped slate roof (replacement to No.36). Although originally a symmetrical pair, the halves now differ in detail. 2 storeys, each 2 windows. No.34 has two 4-pane sashes to stone sills above a large square bay in yellow brick, with hipped lead roof. The sides have plain sash, but the centre is a fixed light with bars including an arch, under a stone lintel with flat scrolled decoration. The return to Fernhill Avenue has a 4-pane sash above deep French doors with transom light, and an early C20 glazed porch, with coloured small-pane lights, over a 4-panel door, and a deep 18-pane sash stair light. In the attached hipped wing is a tall oriel light in 3 panes, with coloured glass panes. No.36 has 4-pane sashes above a porch with coloured glass panes as in No.34, over a 6-panel door with radial fanlight, on 1 step. To the right is a tripartite sash with brick mullions, under a stone lintel as to No.34. Plinth, box eaves, and large central stack. INTERIOR: not inspected. Probably built at the same time as St Augustine's Church (qv), adjoining, with Nos 38-44 (qv) as a group. (RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 358).
