Description
PORTLAND
SY6871 WESTON ROAD, Weston 969-1/4/185 (West side) 16/01/53 No.72
GV II
House, part of row, but probably main wing of original great house. Late C16 or early C17, restored 1991. Large squared coursed block, slate roof. A broad gabled front to street, brought forward from adjoining No 70 (qv), and with extesnions to left and to rear; one room to each level. Two storeys and attic, 1-windowed. Renewed 2 above 3 above 3-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows with stopped drips over, carefully replicated iron casement fittings. To right, down 2 steps, a C20 plank door to 4-centred arch with hollow-chamfer surround. Raised coped verge to cross saddle, and with moulded kneelers; right return has a similar C17 2-light window at first floor. Rear gable wall continues above roof as part of No 82 (qv). To left is a further broad cross gable with large stone stack raised in brick. Interior retains at ground floor a wide 4-centred C16 stone fire surround, cracked at centre, with stone spiral stair to right, and a deep recess to left, formerly a bread oven, but now opened up to a doorway to south side. At first floor a further late C16 4-centred stone fireplace, with moulded jambs to stops, and two large transverse beams with ovolo mould and stops. Roof principals have trenches for former purlins. With Nos 68 (demolished), 70, 80 and 82 (qqv) this building formed a larger free-standing house when originally built, but has now become a series of small units, probably in the C19. Until recently in poor condition, the property has been restored with care, employing surviving historical features where possible. (Royal Commission on Historical Monuments: Dorset: London: 1970-: 257).
