Breakwater, completed 1872. Probably by J.M. Rendel, engineer to the corresponding Inner Breakwater (qv). Runs N/S, with curve towards W at the S end, total length c 1820 m, terminating at the N end in Breakwater Fort (qv). The outer, seaward face strewn with heavy boulders; inner face, towards harbour, has some squared and coursed masonry. Various later accretions, including buildings of Second World War period. At south end protects South Ship Channel.
