Listed Building: ALMA TERRACE, WITH FRONT RAILINGS (381959)

PORTLAND SY67SE GROVE ROAD, Grove 969-1/1/138 (East side) 21/09/78 Nos.1 - 12 (Consecutive) Alma Terrace, with front railings (Formerly Listed as: GROVE ROAD Nos.1-11 (Consecutive) Alma Terrace) GV II Terrace of houses. 1854. Dressed squared stone, slate roofs. A long terrace, formerly six large houses for prison wardens, now in 12 occupations. In two continuous parallel ranges. There is a straight joint between Nos 8 and 9, and a slight change in the frontage alignment. Two storeys and basement, each unit 3-windowed. All good replacement sashes, 16-pane except 12-pane over central porch, and all with deep stooled cills. Projecting gabled porch has 12-pane to segmental head to front, plain return flank left, and part-glazed door, return right; inside also part glazed door. Porches on variously 4 to 6 steps, and forming bridge over basement, with further door below. Plinth, mid string. Flight of steps left of each porch to basement. Two gable and five intermediate ridge stacks in stone with cornice and blocking. Back is in three full storeys with deep-set 16-pane sashes and small service windows, all to deep cills; central door to 4-pane overlight each unit, and broad projecting eaves stacks to stepped cappings. Mid string carried round from front. Interior retains stone tight-well open-string staircases with stick balusters to hardwood wreathed handrail, Doric newel to foot; original or replacement panelled doors. Subsidiary features: across the front of each unit on a dwarf wall are railings with fleur-de-lis heads, and a short return run to steps to porch; the railings return to frontage at the right-hand end of the terrace. The terrace formerly continued with a further six units, now demolished; this section replaced by set of facsimile railings in nine bays, important to the continuity of the street. A good terrace which has been restored with great sensitivity. Listing NGR: SY6955272382
