Description
PORTLAND
SY67SE CASTLETOWN PIER, H.M. Naval Base 969-1/1/155 (North side) Mulberry Harbour, two sections c 115m N of pier
II
Two 'Phoenix' units of former Mulberry Harbour complex. 1944. Reinforced concrete. Two units of the 'floating harbour' produced to assist in the Normandy invasion of 1944. Eight of these units were located in the Harbour in 1946 to provide protection for new pier construction; two of these now remain, permanently moored, and lying due N/S, about 115m north of Castletown Pier. Each unit is c 60m long, 20m wide, and 15m high. Most of the Harbour was towed across to serve the D-day landing of June 6th 1944 on the Normandy beaches; these two sections are appropriately sited in Portland Harbour as a reminder of this remarkable enterprise.
