Description

WEYMOUTH SY6779SE ST THOMAS STREET 873-1/20/334 (East side) 18/06/70 Nos.6 and 7 Coburg Place (terrace) GV II Pair of houses in row, with shop. Early C19 fabric, but possibly concealing earlier work (RCHME). Rendered, high slate mansard roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic, 2+2 windows, all sashes; two 4-pane and two 9-pane raking dormers above a tripartite bow oriel set at an angle, with moulded cornice and sill, one 4-pane and 1 plain sash, and a canted oriel with hipped slate roof, on plain sashes. Ground floor has a shop front with very slender mullions, under a continuous shallow fascia with moulded cornice, moulded sills and stone stall-riser. No.6 has 3 wide lights on the curve, then a deep-set door with transom light, single light with return, plus a further panelled door with transom light, in incised pilasters with caps. No.7 has a glazed door with transom light, in pilasters, plus 2 narrow lights each side of a panelled door with transom light; there is a small return to the right, where the later adjoining building has been set back to the newer street line. A large central stack. INTERIOR inspection (roof not accessible) does not reveal early detail, fittings are mainly mid C20. The building stands slightly forward from the adjoining buildings to the left, returning on a quadrant; this may represent an earlier street line. The relatively low ceiling heights also support the idea of earlier structure. (RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 352). Listing NGR: SY6794879098
