Description

WEYMOUTH SY6779SE ST THOMAS STREET 873-1/20/332 (East side) 12/12/53 No.1 Coburg Place (terrace) (Formerly Listed as: ST THOMAS STREET No.1 Coburg Place) (Formerly Listed as: ST MARY STREET No.108) GV II Includes: No.108 ST MARY STREET. House at end of row, with shop. c1815 (RCHME). Rendered, slate roof. PLAN: the property returns to St Mary Street (No.108), and lies directly opposite the King's Statue (qv). Narrow frontages to St Mary Street to the E and to St Thomas Street (Coburg Place) to the E, with a bold rounded end between, facing N along the Esplanade, and with Statue House (qv) providing an important urban focus. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic, 1+3+1 windows. There are 4 flat-roofed dormers, 3 with sash, and a fourth enlarged to take a 4-light casement. To the E 12-pane sashes at first and second floors, and to the W a 9-pane above a casement with transom. On the broad bowed end are central painted-in sashes in plain reveals, flanked by bowed oriels, to the left with 8:12:8-pane sash above plain sash, and to the right a 6:9:6-pane sash above plain sash. Ground floor has been completely replaced by a late C20 shop front, under a continuous modillion cornice. The bowed end has a mid band, and there is a thin main cornice at the head of the oriels (dentilled to the right oriel, only), with blocking-course and coped parapet. The rear wall has a dormer, and there are 2 large stacks. INTERIOR not inspected. This makes splendid urban theatre externally, combining with Statue House and the King's Statue to provide a fitting setting to the south end of the promenade. It is unfortunate that the earlier shop front has disappeared. A photograph of the 1950s in 'Seaside Weymouth' (Attwooll and West) shows it with small-pane glazing display windows. (RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 354; Attwooll M & West J: Seaside Weymouth: Weymouth: 1989-: 23). Listing NGR: SY6798379198
