Description
WEYMOUTH
SY6778NE ST EDMUND STREET 873-1/23/288 (North side) 14/06/74 Nos.21 AND 22
GV II
Pair of small houses in row, with shops. Early C19, possibly based on earlier work. Rendered, slate roofs. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic, each 1 window; No.21 has a tripartite plain sash in flush box and mullions above a 3-pane display front in fluted pilasters and with dentil cornice, with, to the right, in deep reveals, a 6-panel door with transom light. A small plinth, and the modified cornice has small dentils, below a blocking-course and parapet. No.22 has an early flat-roofed dormer above a bow oriel with tripartite sash with vertical glazing bars only, and dentil cornice, and a 3-pane bow shop front with very thin mullions; to its left is a part-glazed door with transom light, and a further door opening has been cut near the right party wall. A plain band replacing a former cornice, below the blocking course and parapet. No stacks are visible. INTERIOR: the ground floor to No.21 has 2 large plastered beams, and a C19 reeded fire surround. No.22 appears to have been subdivided, with a new staircase to the right, rear. These were built together, and probably reuse some earlier fabric, as the rear wall is reputed to be in good Portland ashlar, and thought to have been originally a front wall, with a small garden to the street.
