WEYMOUTH SY6778NE ST EDMUND STREET 873-1/23/281 (South side) 18/06/70 No.1A Duke of Cornwall Public House (Formerly Listed as: ST EDMUND STREET (South side) The Duke of Cornwall Public House) GV II Public house. C17 fabric, refaced late C18, late C19 display front. Stone, rendered and scribed front, slate roof. The building forms part of a larger C17 group returning to Maiden Street and Custom House Quay; the external evidence remains in the coped gable to the right. 2 storeys, 2 windows; at first floor are 2 large tripartite 8:12:8-pane sashes with flush mullions and boxes, under stopped label moulds, but without sills, above a late C19 public house front in a pilaster surround with shallow fascia and cornice. A central 6-panel door on 1 step is flanked by a 2-light and a 3-light window with thin mullions and slightly rounded heads, with sill and stall-riser; to the left is a further panelled, part-glazed door on a step. The wider expanse of wall to the right reflects the position of the internal fireplaces. The gable is coped, on a prominent kneeler, and a brick stack has been raised to clear the higher Guildhall (qv) adjoining. INTERIOR: early interiors have not survived. This group, including the Ship Inn, Maiden Street (qv), was constructed in good ashlar, and with mullioned casements, but the Duke of Cornwall now looks like an C18 building from the street.
