Description
WEYMOUTH
SY6677NW PORTLAND ROAD, Wyke Regis 873-1/29/636 (West side) Group of monuments adjacent to the south porch, Church of All Saints
GV II
Group of 31 headstones used as a retaining wall. Portland stone. C17, C18 and C19. The series of monuments has been set, some vertically, and some on their sides, to form a continuous low wall, finishing to a common level at the top. They extend westwards from the SW corner of the S porch, to the churchyard path entry at the N end of the Old Rectory (qv). Several of the stones have sunk panels, with lettering in capitals, of the C17, and one includes a date of 1601. The largest stone extends approx 2m x 1m, but others are small units. Although removed from their original locations in the churchyard, these monuments, including some of the earliest in date, are of historical importance to the church and the former village.
