Listed Building: MANOR COTTAGE (467820)

WEYMOUTH SY7083 PRESTON ROAD, Preston 873-1/9/479 (South side) 14/06/74 No.230 Manor Cottage GV II Detached house. C17. Rubble, thatch roof. A large cottage, set gable to the road, behind and abutting Nos 228 & 230 (qqv); the position of the outer stack suggests that the property was extended by one bay at this end. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 4 windows; all leaded wood casements. To the first floor are three 4-light and one 2-light, all to eyebrows, and at ground floor, mainly to concrete lintels, are a 4-light, then a 3-light stone hollow-chamfer mullioned casement with label, and a small 2-light. To the left of the stone window is an inserted small light. Off-centre right is a 3-plank door. The rear has three 4-light casements to eyebrows. The left gable is rendered, with an attached C20 conservatory, and the right gable has a 2-light casement at first floor. There are 2 very large stacks in Portland ashlar, at the right gable, and between the first 2 bays at the left end. INTERIOR: has a former cross passage, now without rear access, with remains of a heavy timber-framed partition to the right, incorporating 2 reset peaked-head doorways. The room to the left, which has been divided laterally by a later partition, has a reset deep-chamfered late C16 or early C17 beam, stopped at one end, and a large stone fireplace with deep flush lintel and chamfered surround. The room to the right has a wide fireplace with stone jambs and cambered timber bressumer; to the left a brick bread-oven with original cast-iron door with strap hinges. There are early joists to the ground floor. The roof is of C20 construction. HISTORICAL NOTE: the architect Walmsley Lewis restored the house in the 1930s.
