WEYMOUTH SY6879 ESPLANADE 873-1/21/138 (West side) 12/12/53 Nos.60-65 (Consecutive) Johnstone Row (terrace) (Formerly Listed as: ESPLANADE Nos.60-67 (Consecutive) Johnstone Row) GV II Terrace of 6 houses (7th house in terrace is part of Statue House (qv)). c1805-1810. Rendered, slate double mansard roofs. PLAN: RCHME gives a typical plan (p.356) showing a transverse central dogleg stair to 2 principal rooms at each level, and a service wing; several units have a ground-floor shop. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, attic and basement, 1 or 2 windows to each. All have a continuous moulded cornice, continuous through the oriels, blocking-course and coped parapet. Nos 60 & 61 have each a flat-roofed dormer above a bowed oriel; that to No.60 has plain sashes, and a full-width C19 shop front, No.61 retains glazing bars to all 3 floors, a small light set back to the basement, and an arched doorway to the left, on 4 stone steps. Each house has deep stacks to the right party wall. The remaining houses each have 2 dormers above a window plus oriel at each level; No.62 has plain sashes, and a bow replaced by a canted oriel, with a full-width C19 shop front with large consoles, but late C20 window. Nos 63 & 64 are the best retained externally, each having 2 dormers above 9 and 12-pane sashes to flush moulded boxes, and 6:9:6 above 8:12:8-pane bows. Ground floor is a C20 display front across the double property. A rendered ridge stack to each end, and the rear includes dormer windows and sashes; the lower floors are concealed by later infill brought out to the St Mary Street frontage. No.65 has 2 dormers, glazing-bar sashes to first and second floors, and a simplified display window in 3 broad panes with transom to the ground floor, below which is a set-back light to the basement. To the left, in an arch in 2 orders, is a C20 door with plain fanlight on 5 stone steps. There are ridge stacks to the right. INTERIOR: not inspected. (RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 354).
