Description

SY 68 SW FLEET EAST FLEET 6/114 Old Parish Church 26.1.56 - II* Former Parish Church, now Mortuary Chapel of the Mohuns c.C15 Chancel. Nave damaged by a gale in 1824. Chancel repaired and enclosed by a new west wall, 1827. Nave demolished 1827. Rubble-stone walls with stone sleeper buttresses at west end. East end buttressed with set-offs. Stone slab roof with stone gable-copings and scroll kneelers. Crosses at both gable apices. East window with a pointed head and single stone mullion (ovolo-moulded), leaded lozenge lights, C17. Side walls each have a blocked opening with pointed-segmental heads. West doorway with moulded stone jambs and a pointed head, re-used C17 material. Niches to left and right of this, with ogival heads. Plank-and-muntin door, studded. Interior: arch-braced collar roof with open trefoil above the collar. 2 sets of purlins and a ridge-piece. Monuments: 1) Stone wall tablet, left of altar, with fielded-panel pilasters, broken semi-circular pediment, with urn in tympanum. Brass plate with Latin inscription to Robert Mohun, 1603. 2) Stone wall tablet, right of altar, similar design, to Maximilian Mohun, 1612. With family and children praying. 3) South wall, wall tablet to Franciscus Mohun, died 25th February, 1711-12, aged 84. Slate tablet. Stone surround with gadrooned cill, conventional foliage in pilasters, apron with a winged cherub. Semi-circular pediment with shield-of-arms.
