North part of Tudor House Hotel (formerly listed as Tudor House)

C16 refashioned in C18. 3 storeys on basement. 4 window bays. Slate gabled roof. Plastered stone front; timber-framed structure. Long and short quoins. Moulded dentil and fluted eaves cornice. Stringcourse above ground floor. Formerly sash windows in all floors; now modern 2-light wood casements on 2nd floor. Openings on ground floor with dripmoulds over; from left to right hand end, modern transomed and mullioned window, modern French casement, modern transomed and mullioned window and, at right hand end, a doorway; ledged door with hinges. Plinth. Within, moulded late C16 beams to ground floor rooms; late C17 to early C18 staircase. Formerly in a 1st floor room a good plaster ceiling of 1601; this has now been removed and only the frieze remains, In attic, possibly a frieze of cherub-heads modelled in plaster (see RCHM, Dorset, Vol I).
No 1, Tuder House Hotel & Nos 6 to 12 (consec), Church Street form a group. The north front of the Guildhall forms a stop at the south end of this group.
