CHEDINGTON CHEDINGTON VILLAGE ST 40 NE 12.6.53 2/179 Chedington Court and Wall along lane to south GV II
Country House, now an Hotel, c1840 and remodelled date 1894 on bell-cote. In an eclectic C17 style, for W T Cox. Ashlar stone walls. Slate roofs. Tall chimney stacks on left gable wall, three with moulded cornices. stack on right gable-end, set diagonally. 2-3 storeys. 5 irregular bays, each differently articulated. Bay 2: large canted bay to ground and first with parapet. Simple Dutch gable. Bay 3: porch with round-arch entrance projecting voussoirs and dropped key. 3-light mullion over HMP tablet (Peto.). Open pediment over with shield of arms. Steep gable with pyramid finials. Bay 4: ground level with 6-light stone mullions, 2x2x2, ramped parapet. 2nd and 3rd storeys are set well back, having 3- and 2-light mullions respectively. Plain gable with ball-finial at apex. Bay 5: 2 2-light stone mullions. Projecting stack feature corbelled out above ground floor window. Openwork Tudor Rose panel. Dutch gable with ball and pyramid finials, and terminating in a stack, set diagonally Facade therefore eclectic, quirky and irregular. Interior Hall with compartmented ceiling of thin wooden ribs, c1894. Wide 3-centred opening to staircase-bay and service-bay. Projecting key and dentils. Drawing Room has coupled fluted columns framing the entrance to the canted bay. Ogival block capitals with oak-leaf motif. Adam-style fireplace. Staircase, c1894, in Queen Anne style. Rubble-stone wall along lane, clO foot high and for 5O yards, becoming lower ramped down. Round-arch entrance with a large keystone and with dressed stone jambs.
