Description

DEWLISH SY 79 NE DEWLISH PARK 5/58 Dewlish House 26.1.56 - I Country house in grounds 1702 (Hutchins). Front and left end walls of ashlar stone, rear and right end walls of brick. Hipped slate roof with central lead flat. Brick end stacks and one right of centre, with recessed panels and oversailing caps. Double pile plan. 2 storeys and attic. Entrance front has modillion cornice, plat band at first floor level, and moulded plinth. The centre bay, and 2 end bays project slightly, the end bays with pseude-hips. Centre bay has a shallow Flemish style pediment with enriched cornice. Rusticated quoins. Pair of oak panelled doors, with fanlight, in classical surround, under segmental broken pediment with central coat of arms, on Roman Doric pilasters. In centre bay, 2 sashes with glazing bars on ground floor, 3 on first floor, and one in attic pediment. In each of the end bays, ground and first floors each have 2 sashes with glazing bars. One hipped dormer with similar sashes in attic. In intermediate sections, ground and first floors each have one sash with glazing bars; attic has 2 dormers with similar sashes. Rear, garden, elevation of brick. Central projecting bay with pediment. Sashes with glazing bars on ground and first floors, the central first floor window round-headed, in stone surround. Hipped dormers with similar sashes in attic. At west end, earlier service ranges demolished. Stables round courtyard, at lower level, with terrace above, at level of first floor of house. Internally, hall has re-used C17 panelling, and C18 fireplace surround. Behind this,in stair hall, C18 cut string stair with twisted and turned balusters, wreathed handrail and carved spandrel brackets, the underside of the stair shaped to follow their profile. Simpler, service stair nearer west end. Adjoining this, part of a Roman Mosaic pavement set on wall. In the study, raised pine panelling with bolection mouldings. In the oak room, at east end, raised oak panelling; enriched plaster ceiling and cornice. In the Library, re-set panelling, and stone fireplace surround made up of fragments of earlier stonework including 2 traceried panels. Good C18 house, with much surviving interior work.
