3/140 Parish Church of 11.11.60 St Michael and All Angels

Parish Church. C14 and C15 south tower. Chancel rebuilt by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin 1845-7; nave, aisles and north porch rebuilt by J Hicks, 1859, in Decorated style. Random rubble-stone and coursed rubble walls with chamfered plinth and dressed stone quoins. Stone slab roof with stone gable-copings, and galvanised iron on chancel. South Tower: 3 stages, 2 lower of early C14, and top stage C15. East wall, blocked doorway with chamfered jambs and pointed head. South wall has a window of 3 cinquefoiled lights with vertical tracery in a 2-centred head with moulded reveals. West wall has a C19 doorway. 2nd stage: windows of one pointed light in the north, south and west walls. Bell-chamber: has in each wall a window of 2 trefoiled lights with a quatrefoil in a 2-centred head with moulded reveals, the lights are filled with stone guilles of pierced quatrefoils. Embattled parapet, pinacles and gargoyles and C15 stair tower. Chancel: 2 bays, 2-light windows with ogival cusping and inverted trefoil in head, under segmental-pointed arches. East window of 3 main lights with intersecting tracery and open trefoils and quatrefoils. Label with head-stops. Stone gable-coping with cross-in-wheel over. Diagonal buttresses. Nave and aisles, 4 bays, no clerestory, aisle windows are 2-light with veticulated quatrefoil heads. West window of 4 lights with ogival cusping and flowing tracery, 5-pointed figure made up of mouchettes, in head of window. Interior: chancel, ceiled in mansard shape with ceiled ashlaring, painted blue with gold stars. Nave roof: steep cross-braced arch-brace roof brought down onto stone angel-corbels, ashlaring, one set of purlins. Nave has north and south aisles, quatrefoil piers and capitals with naturalistic foliage, stilted and segmental- pointed arches; organ-chamber fills the easternmost bay of south aisle, specially designed. Chancel-arch has moulded jambs, responds and naturalistic foliage capitals, pointed arch. Fittings: Font, mid C19, stone with large octagonal stem and bowl, with carved figures of saints and evangelists on bowl under canopied niches. Figures around stem. Piscina: in tower, south wall, recess with trefoiled ogee head and plain drain, C14. Stained Glass, probably designed by Pugin, made by Powell.
