NORTH WOOTTON ST 61 SE - 10/76 Remains of Old Church of St Mary Magdalene 31.7.61 - II* West tower of former parish church. Early C15. The nave and chancel were demolished about 1883 when the C19 church was built. Local rubble walls with freestone dressings. Roof covered with stone slates. Tower of 3 storeys with a low pyramidal roof and diagonal west buttresses. The west window is of one pointed light. The second stage has a small loop in the south wall. The bell-chamber has a 2-light window in the east and west walls, the former now blocked. The pointed tower-arch has chamfered reveals and is now blocked. Set in the blocking is a doorway with a C19 head and a triangular rear-arch. Adjoining the east face of the tower are the butt-ends of the destroyed nave. The tower is heavily ivy-grown, and in a ruinous condition. (RCHM, Dorset I, p 267(1)).
