MELBURY OSMOND ST 5707 MELBURY OSMOND VILLAGE The Old Rectory 8/104 4.12.51 II* GV Former rectory in garden, now private dwelling. C17 south range, with C17 or C18 range at right angles to north of it, which in turn has a C19 addition on its east side at north end. Present entrance now on west front. Rubble-stone walls. Slate roofs, ridge east-west on south range, with stone gable-copings, and 2 parallel ridges run north. Brick stacks at gable ends of south range, and on ridge of north-east wing, and in valley behind. Two storeys and attics. East elevation, from south to north: gable-end of south range has 2-light hollow- chamfered stone mullions with separate labels over and iron casements. Single light window in gable-head. Right of this, 2-light wood casements. Projecting north-east range, 3 windows: ground floor has 2-light and 3-light casements with glazing-bars. First floor, two sashes with glazing-bars, and a 3-light casement with glazing-bars. Stone architraves and cills. Doorway at centre, with a flat stone architrave and C20 door. South wall has two 2-light ovolo-moulded stone mullions with separate labels, and C19 iron casements, irregular spaced. West elevation, also very irregular, with a projecting stack embrasure of the gable-end. Left of this, the front entrance, panelled and glazed door, C20. Iron casements with lead lights over this. Interior: the west part of the cross-wing has original moulded ceiling-beams with a central boss carved as a sunflower. Open fireplace. Dining-room has exposed ceiling beams and C17 door. Early C18 staircase has turned balusters, and a ramped handrail. (RCHM. Dorset I, p.160 (2))
