9/3 Dovecote 15 metres north west of 26.1.56 Athelhampton Hall
GV II*
Free standing circular dovecote. Early C16, with roof timbers replaced C20. Roughly coursed rubble stone with occasional repairs in brick, with a coved stone eaves-cornice. Four ashlar buttresses of two stages are set symmetrically around the circumference. Clay tiled conical roof, with an octagonal cedar-wood lantern, C20 replacement. The dovecote is entered from the east through a low ashlar doorway with a chamfered four centred head. The internal wall face has under 600 pigeon-holes formerly accessible by a wooden ladder on a cantilevered frame which pivots on a central post. (RCHM Dorset III, p13(2)).
