ST 60 SW BATCOMBE BATCOMBE VILLAGE 4/7 Parish Church of 31.7.61 St Mary. GV I Parish Church. C15 nave and west tower. Chancel rebuilt in 1864, north porch added in 1864. Rubble-stone and flint walls, with freestone dressings. Clay-tile roofs. West tower 3 stages with diagonal buttresses, embattled parapet with pinnacles and gargoyles at the angles. West doorway, main entrance to church. Newel-stair is in the north-east angle of the tower. Nave: north wall has one C15 window with 3 cinquefoiled ogee lights, vertical tracery, moulded and shafted reveals, and label with head-stops. C15 north doorway has chamfered jambs and 2-centred head. South wall has two windows, similar to that in the north wall, eastern without a label. South doorway is uniform with north doorway. Chancel, mid C19 2-light windows of Perpendicular form, both with shafted reveals, the south window with internal stone bench. Interior: tower-arch is moulded and springs from moulded responds, reveals and soffit have a single row of sunk panels with pointed heads. Nave roof: collar-beam with curved traces forming 4-centred arches. Carved foliage bosses at the intersections. Fittings: Font: roughly circular stone bowl with four strips of cable ornament at corners with lugs at the top, incised concentric circles between them. Under bowl, re-used crude volute capital with cable necking. Square stem with chamfered angles; bowl and capital C12, stem later. Screen, under chancel-arch, solid stone dado and above this 4 bays and a central entrance; side bays are divided by shafted mullions into 2 cinquefoiled lights each. Doorway has 4-centred arch and 2 cinquefoiled lights above it. Late C15. Embattled stone cornice is much re-cut. Good wall-tablets and monuments in West tower.
