CASTLETON SHAFTESBURY ROAD (A30) ST 61 NE Old Parish Church of 6/23 St Cuthbert, Oborne 31.7.61 - II* Remaining Chancel of former parish church. Dated 1533, on one inscription, over east window. Coursed rubble-stone walls and dressed stone quoins. Stone slate roof with stone gable-copings. C19 cross at east gable. Gabled sanctus bell-cote at west gable. Chancel rebuilt in early C16. The east window is of four 4-centred lights in a square head, with an inscritpion on the lintel: "Orate pro bono statu do(n)pni Johis. M. abbatis de Schirbom ano. Domini MCCCCCXXXIII". Lozenge-leaded lights, glazed. Flanking the window are stone shields bearing (left) a crozier between the initials I. M., and (right) the arms of the abbey. Over the head of the window is a shield of the royal Tudor arms with a crown. In the north wall is a window similar to the east window, but now blocked. On the lintel the inscription: "Orate pro bono statu dompni Johis. Dunster sacriste de Schirbom qui hoc opus fieri fecit ano. Domini". Flanking it are shields bearing a device, perhaps, the initials I.D. and the arms of Horsey. South wall has a window similar to the east window, but without inscription or shields. The doorway has chamfered jambs and four-centre head. In the West wall are the wave-moulded responds of the chancel-arch, upon which rests an early C16 moulded beam with mortices for the rood-loft and a C20 gable wall above. In the blocking is a reset C15 doorway with chamfered jambs and two-centred head. Reset in the gable are two C15 window heads, each of 2 trefoiled lights with tracery in a 2-centred head. The nave is represented by portions of foundations extending 11 metres, to west of the chancel. Interior: the roof of the chancel is a compartmented barrel ceiling, plastered and with some C16 moulded ribs and wall-plates. Fittings: Font, octagonal stone bowl and stem, c.C16. Pulpit: four-sided with moulded styles and rails, 3 ranges of panels, two lower with lozenge enrichments, upper with conventional designs with fleur-de-lis, enriched cornice and scrolled brackets to bookshelf, with date 1639. Communion rails, with turned balusters and moulded rail with enrichment, C17. Communion table: with turned legs and enriched top rails, C17. Tiles: in chancel, ornamental stip-tiles set in C20 panels, with shields of arms. The church is vested in the Redundant Churches Fund. (RCHM Dorset I, p.63(3))
