Description

WEST STAFFORD SY 78 NW 11/204 Talbothayes Lodge - II Detached house, c1890. Designed by Thomas Hardy for his brother and 2 sisters. Brick walls, hipped slate roof with crested ridge. Plastered stacks with dentil caps, set irregularly. 2 storeys and attic. On main front, a 2-storeyed porch, right of centre, with hipped roof. Raised panel door in round arched opening with solid tympanum. Above this, one sash with glazing bars. Later single storey flat roofed addition left of porch, has one casement with glazing bars. Right of porch, one sash with glazing bars, under segmental arch, on each floor. Left of porch, above the flat roofed addition, one sash with glazing bars at mezzanine level. Left of this one sash with glazing bars under segmental arch,on each floor. At left end, a section set back slightly, has one similar sash on each floor. In attic, one flat roofed dormer with casements with centre horizontal bar. Internally, cut string stair with turned balusters and spandril brackets. At rear of stair hall, round arch in square timber frame with pseudo voussoirs and pilasters. 2 plain round arched openings on upper landing. Included as one of only two known surviving houses by Thomas Hardy. Listing NGR: SY7338089599
