Description
HIGH EAST STREET 1. 5l91 (South Side) No 26 SY 6990 7/227 II 2. Early C16 or possibly late C15 remodelled in early C19. Rear portion probably late C16 or early C17. Stucco, probably over timber-frame. Hipped slate roof. 3 storeys. Moulded wooden eaves conice. 1 cased sash with glazing bars on 2nd floor. 1 canted oriel with moulded cornice and sashes with glazing bars on 1st floor. Altered C19 shopfront on ground floor - glazed door with glazing bars and fanlight with glazing bars. Ground floor interior has ceiling taken on a grid of deeply moulded joists (4 orders of moulding to those in front, 1 convex and 1 concave to those behind). For the front part c.f. the oriel ceiling in Abbot's Hall, Milton Abbas (1498) or contemporary church ceilings in Dorset (eg Holwell, Puddletown, Hazelbury Drian). although more elaborate, these examples may help to date No 26 High East Street. Nearer to hand are the ceilings of the north and south chapels in St Peter's Church, High West Street. All Saint's Church and Nos 21 to 26 (consec) form a group with No 1 Cornhill
