Description

SOUTH STREET 1. 5191 (West Side) No 49 (National Westminster Bank) SY 6990 7/294 II GV 2. 1899 or 1900. Ashlar Bath stone. 2 storeys and attics. Continuous moulded sill courses. Plain band above 1st floor. Heavy modillion eaves cornice with parapet above. 5 bays, of which 4 outer ones break forward and are crowned by modillion pediments, with yeux-de- boeuf windows and elaborate sculpted tympana. Central door with 6 huge fielded panels, semi-circular fanlight, moulded imposts with egg-and-dart moulding, moulded and blocked voussoirs with triple keystone. This is flanked by 2 blocked Ionic 3/4 columns, taking pulvinated frieze, dentilled cornice and broken segmental pediment (which also breaks back in centre) enclosing a die with moulded cornice and surmounting vase. The 4 ground floor windows have plate glass, moulded and blocked architraves and triple keystones. Central one has flat moulded cornice and outer 4 have moulded cornices which break upwards segmentally in centre. Contemporary iron railings and downpipes at either end.
